More on the Christian Right
Posted by mormondemocrats on September 12, 2008
When are Republican Mormons going to wake up to what’s really going on with the Republican Party and the Christian Right? The fact that the GOP is merely using the Christian Right, and evangelicals in particular, to keep themselves in power is becoming more and more obvious over time. Every election cycle, whether it be presidential , congressional or local, we hear from the Republican candidates how important it is to vote based on values and morals, abortion and stem cell research, but then they do nothing about it and revert back to pandering to corporate interests. If you look carefully you can see the rift in the words coming from some of the Republican elite. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnXImj4_OJ0 for a good example. Why the evangelicals put up with it is beyond me.
What is even harder for me to understand is why Mormons fall for the even more obvious exploitation by the Christian Right of the Mormon Republican faithful. If the Republican elites are exploiting the evangelicals then the evangelicals are absolutely abusing the Mormon conservatives. Romney’s campaign was a good glimpse into this reality. The Christian Right plays nice to the Mormons during the election cycles (unless it is a Mormon that is actually running) and then sends protesters to Temple Square in April to protest our abortion position. They don’t consider us Christian and only try to make us feel included when they want to capitalize on our votes. Maybe I’m a conspiracy theorist but it just seems so obvious to me.

I’m not suggesting that all Mormons need to be Democrats. I think there are plenty of truly conservative Mormons that fit well in the Republican Party. I am just disappointed by the large numbers of Republican Mormons I talk to who think that the Republican Party is the “party of religion” and therefore the party has their best religious interests at heart. I don’t believe it does. I actually think that if you look past the rhetoric and the wedge issues and look at what values and principles the parties really stand for and work for, the Democratic Party better fits my views as a Mormon.

i full heartily agree. once people see me pull up to church with my “i’m too poor to vote republican” bumper sticker, i get looked at and questioned about my values for not following the “righteous” party. it blows my mind that most mormons/christians feel republican=Christlike values. and i don’t understand why people would think the republican party has the “family values” at heart. why? because they don’t believe in abortion? you would think then, that they would be angry at pres. bush for hacking away at school funding because childrens education should fall in that category as “putting families first”. so, grandpa could be working into his 70′s because social security is in negative numbers, and mom could have to work because dad’s not making enough money to cover all the extra taxes that the big business man doesn’t have, and little jimmy’s school will have to close down and combined with other already packed school because the funding isn’t there to cover the staff…but, as long as the republican party is against abortion and gay marriage, then it’s the party taking care of family values. maybe we can let go of our “values” for a second, open our minds and vote for whichever party will get us out of this hole, then you can go back to listening to your preachers, bishops, priests about how great the republican party is.

Does any one know of a Prophet or Apostle that has not been a republican? I don’t. Should make you stop and think.

Heber J. Grant was a very active democrat and Faust was a Utah party official. For a more extensive list of apostles, 70, etc you might click on over to the http://www.mormondemocrat.com section dedicated to famous mo dems.

Conservative Republicans are proposing a 10-point checklist gauging proper adherence to core principles of the party. This approach reminds me of Moody’s Fundamentals of Christianity, which began the fundamentalist movement. For more, I recommend http://euandus3.wordpress.com/2009/11/24/the-fundamentals-of-the-gop/

Many Mormons vote republican because to the wedge issue of abortion. We need to keep in mind that our leaders are not fanatical nuts. The official stand on abortion by the church is actually quite libera. The leaders allow for abortions in the following circumstances: the life and health of the mother, rape or incest, and now if the fetus is unviable after birth. The church leaders have never called for the criminalization of abortion.
