Religious Right = Achilles’ Heel of the GOP

Posted by demlawyer on January 14, 2010

Pat Roberston is a perfect example of all that is wrong with the Religious Right and why I believe the unholy alliance between the fiscal conservatives and the religious right will eventually become too strained to maintain (think McCain/Palin and going rogue).

Pat Robertson is a televangelist. I’m not exactly sure how you’re connecting him to the GOP. There are kooks beloning to both sides of the political spectrum, but I don’t see how his comments can be considered in any way as representative or reflective of the GOP.

But if you want to talk about Achilles’ Heels, then look no farther than Harry Reid, who is in my opinion, the Achilles’ Heel of the Liberal Left. Everytime I hear his name mentioned I shudder to think that he’s a Mormon and that people might view his actions as representative of my religion.

Really? Seriously? How do I connect Roberston to the GOP? He ran for the GOP presidential ticket in 88, placing second in the Iowa caucus, ahead of Bush. He appears regularly on political talk shows stumping for the GOP and GOP candidates. He founded the Christian Coalition, which has been sued repeatedly by the FEC for ianappropriately coordinating Republican campaigns. Robertson is closely tied to his protege Ralph Reed, who Roberston hired to run the CC, and who later went on to be a key Bush campaign manager and spokesperson. So, to your point, I think it’s very reasonable to connect him to the GOP. Simply calling him a television evangilist is like saying Al Sharpton is nothing but a Baptist minister. That doesn’t mean Pat speaks for the GOP or Republicans generally. I didn’t say that. My point, if you reread my post, was that he clearly represents the Christian Right, which I think you would have to agree with. My further point was that if the Christian Right continues in its radical ways it will eventually become difficult for the GOP to hold together their alliance of fiscal conservatives and the Christian Right. We already saw a lot of that strain in the McCain/Palin campaign. Fiscal conservatives like Mitt Romney clearly have to bite their tongues and hold their noses to associate with fellow Republicans like Palin, Huckabee and Brownback. What I don’t understand is the willingness of so many LDS Republicans to toe the line with the Christian Right. These are generally the same people that show up at General Conference and yell stuff at us for our “liberal” position on abortion. I too have disagreements with Harry Reid but I don’t see how that has anything to do with my post.

I think there’s a lot of truth to this, although I think there are more divisions than just the social conservatives and fiscal conservatives. And as bad as the Republicans are wounding themselves and not really putting out a real positive message we should remember that in 2004 the Democrats were in just as much disorder. So things can change swiftly once leaders start putting forth a clear message.

This is an excellent point. I don’t see how so many mormons can still stand next to right-winged radicals such as Sara Pallin and Pat Robertson. I guess its because the majority of republican mormons are completely uneducated on the issues like rest of their party.
This article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8474611.stm articulates more on that point.
